Frequently asked questions: MBA

We’ve put together a detailed list of FAQs from our webinar to provide you with additional insights about the AUT Online Master of Business Administration (MBA).

Programme format and structure

How long does it take to complete the programme part-time vs full-time?

Currently, AUT Online programmes are only offered part-time.

The MBA can be completed in 2 years, but you have the flexibility to extend your studies and take up to 4 years if needed. You could also choose a shorter postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma if you want to gain a qualification quickly.

Why is the online MBA shorter than the on-campus version?

Great question! The on-campus MBA uses 10-point courses, so it takes a bit longer to complete the 180-point degree. The online MBA follows a trimester structure with 30-point courses, enabling you to finish the same qualification in two years part-time.

Can I switch between full-time and part-time study if my circumstances change?

At this stage, all AUT Online programmes are only available part-time. Full-time study is not currently offered.

Are there specialisation options or electives in fields like leadership or entrepreneurship?

While we don’t offer formal specialisations, leadership and entrepreneurship are embedded in our courses. AUT Online’s applied learning approach lets you apply what you learn directly to your professional context; helping you build practical skills and insights in these areas, alongside a strong foundation in general management.

Do I need a specific GPA for the AUT Online MBA?

No minimum GPA is required to apply for AUT Online programmes. We consider your academic background or relevant work experience when assessing your application. Once you're enrolled in the MBA, you’re expected to maintain a B– average to continue in the programme. This isn’t required for the postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma.

What is the balance between theory and practice?

At AUT, we make sure theory and practice go hand in hand. Our lecturers bring real-world experience into the classroom, so you won’t just learn the ‘why’ – you’ll understand the ‘how’, and feel confident applying it in your own work and context.

Will I study on my own or collaborate with classmates?

About 30% of your assessments will involve group work, giving you a chance to collaborate with your peers. You’ll connect and work together online via Microsoft Teams and Canvas (our easy-to-use online learning platform), helping you build valuable teamwork skills alongside your independent study.

Fees and payment

What is the AUT Online MBA Award?

Support and flexibility

What academic and student support is available for online learners like me?

As an AUT Online student, you’ll have access to your lecturers via email and online chat. You’ll also be supported by a dedicated team of student success advisors, available 7 days a week.

In addition, you'll enjoy the same support services as on-campus students, including access to academic workshops delivered online through the AUT library.

Are mentoring, networking, or career development services available for AUT Online MBA students?

Absolutely! As an AUT Online MBA student, you’ll have full access to the AUT Employability Lab – your hub for career support. From employer presentations and expos to workshops, mentoring and networking events, there are plenty of opportunities to grow your connections and career. You’re also welcome to attend any on-campus networking events.

Can I take a break from my study if needed?

You sure can. We understand that life can get busy or unexpected things may come up. That’s why the programme enables you to take a break for a trimester if needed.

Because you’re studying part-time, you’ll have up to four years to complete the MBA, giving you the flexibility to study at your own pace.

Career recognition and alumni

How is the AUT MBA perceived in New Zealand, Australia and internationally?

AUT is ranked among the top 1% of universities worldwide, and our qualifications are internationally recognised. The AUT Business School is accredited by both EQUIS and AACSB – two of the most prestigious global business school accreditations – placing us among the world's leading institutions for business education, and reinforcing our commitment to excellence in business education.

Can online students access the alumni network and attend networking events?

Absolutely! As an AUT Online student, you’re a full member of the university community. You’ll have access to the alumni network, as well as the opportunity to attend networking events, workshops and other university-wide activities – just like you would if you were studying on campus.

Exit options

Are there shorter study options if I don’t complete the full MBA?

Yes, our programmes are designed to be flexible and stackable. This means you can complete a postgraduate certificate and seamlessly transfer into a postgraduate diploma or the full MBA, without any additional time added. If you decide to exit early, you can also choose to graduate with a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma instead of a full MBA.
